Design and wood technology

Design and wood technology is a three-year undergraduate study programme at the University of Gävle.The design part of the education is modelled after studies in industrial, interior and furniture design. Design and development projects will comprise a great deal of the study time, and these projects will, as far as possible, be carried out in collaboration with wood industries.The wood technology part of the study programme is aimed at giving the students a comprehensive knowledge of different species of wood, how they can be worked and for what purposes they are best suited. Knowledge of wood joinery and finish, especially in an industrial context, is also important. Wood is defined as all materials in which wood is an essential raw material, that is fibreboard, chipboard, veneer, corrugated paper, cardboard, compressed wood etc. Other materials, primarily metals and plastics, will also be treated in the studies. The university accepts 24 students each year. The next admission of students will be in the end of August 2010. The wood labour market in SwedenWood is one of Sweden's most important raw materials, but most of it is utilised and exported with very little processing. There is a great potential for more refined products. Design competence and ingenuity are important strategic resources for the development of industries. The intention is that the studies will result in persons who will significantly contribute to this development. The broad orientation in design brings about skills to purchase design, as a link between industrial enterprises and professional designers. There is of course also a possibility that some will become designers themselves.
