What is the GIS Institute
The GIS Institute of Gävle (GiG) is a centre formation at the University of Gävle, and is as an organizational unit directly subordinated the university management.
The aim of GiG is to promote, initiate and do research and development within the area of Geographic information systems (GIS).
As a centre formation, the institute has a special responsibility that the activities are carried out in collaboration with stakeholders in the business world, municipalities and public activities. GiG has a committee with representatives from the university, the business world and the public activities (link to the GiG committee

Mainly scientists at the University of Gävle, from the subject fields of geomatics, business economics, computer science and building quality, are participating in the project activities. GiG is placed in the technique park (link), which is one of Gävle municipality´s strategic development areas.
This makes it possible to create close contacts with both the business world and other university activities. Gävle has been something of a national centre within the area of Geographical Information (GI). The Swedish mapping agency has its main office in Gävle, in which most of its research and development activities are carried out.
Many municipalities in the region are in the front regarding to applications within GIS, and the region has also an active business world within the GIS area. GIS education is provided within the geomatic programme at the University of Gävle, with possibilities to many different degrees. The institute of building science (IBF) is also in Gävle, which is connected to the University of Uppsala, and to the institute of Build and environment (BMG), formerly connected to the Technical University of Stockholm.
