Reliable Wireless Machine-to-Machine Communications in Electromagnetic Disturbed Industrial and Hospital Environments

Project Description

The Current Situation

Wireless communications for machine-to-machine communications in industries, nuclear plants and hospitals is a rapidly growing market. Examples are communication between robots and various kinds of controller or navigation systems for autonomous vehicles in large factory halls. In hospitals for instance, wireless telemetry is used for monitoring patients at cardiology units.

Problems

There are two major problems associated with industrial wireless applications compared to an office environment. Multi-path propagation usually causes much more severe distortion in environments with large halls and many objects with metallic surfaces. Industrial and hospital environments also usually exhibit significantly higher levels of radiated electromagnetic interference than in an office environment. This electromagnetic interference arises from different electronic systems, from processes and maintenance systems.

Issues and Objective

Present commercial wireless communication technologies are not optimized to cope with these kinds of interference environments. A number of serious accidents where electromagnetic interference has been the primary cause are reported and confirms the need for research about these demanding environments. The objective of this project is to develop improvements of wireless technologies to increase the reliability for use in electromagnetically disturbed industrial environments.

Quick Facts

The projcet started January 2009 and will run until December 2011. It is a KKS project (KKS Dnr 2008/0494). KKS supports the project with 3.744 kSEK.
