Welcome to the GIS Institute

The GIS-institute of Gävle (GiG) is a centre formation within the University of Gävle. Here can companies, driven by the state, the municipalities or privately held, collaborate through different research and development projects, concentrated on applications in Geographical information systems (GIS). The aim is to promote the competence and the development within the region, and thus create prerequisites for commercial activities.

Lantmäteriet i samverkan med ESRI S-GROUP Sverige och Linfo Norrbotten utlyser ett resestipendium till minne av Stefan Stenlunds betydelsefulla och banbrytande insatser inom GIS-tekniken i Sverige (link: PDF)PDF (pdf, 17 kB). Stipendiet riktar sig till GIS-verksamma i Sverige. Sista ansökningsdag är 6 maj 2011.

EduServ9 (link: PDF)PDF (pdf, 440 kB) - the 2011 series of e-learning courses from EuroSDR - will start with a pre-course seminar, hosted by IGN / ENSG in Marne la Vallée, France, from 8th to 9th March 2011. The seminar will be followed by four two-week distance e-learning courses.

The sixth newsletter (link:

The regular runtime of the project ended in September 2010, but it got granted an extension by six months. In this newsletter, the state of the following main achievements are presented: The HUMBOLDT Framework for Data Harmonisation, the Scenario Application and the Training Framework.

The fifth newsletter (link: HTML,external link, opens in new window PDFexternal link, opens in new window) for the HUMBOLDT project has now been published. In the newsletter, much attention is drawn to the INSPIRE conference in Krakow, Poland. Furthermore, there is information about the current Open Sources releases, the participation of recent conferences and the current state of the HUMBOLDT Scenario Demonstrators. Finally, upcoming events and activities are presented.

The sixth newsletter from VESTA-GIS is now available and can be downloaded here.PDF (pdf, 2 MB) It contains a general overview about the VESTA-GIS tools used to support the training, i.e. the e-learning platform and the Geoportal. Moreover, the functionalities of the VESTA-GIS Course catalogue is described, and some of the courses in the catalogue are presented.

The second newsletterexternal link, opens in new window from the EU-project Nature-SDIplus is now available at their homepageexternal link, opens in new window. The project started in October 2008 and aims to improve the harmonisation of national and sectoral datasets on nature conversation. The projects supports the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive by making the datasets accessible and exploitable.

The newsletter contains information about the results from the user needs analysis, data policy survey and dataset analysis. Moreover, the Nature-SDIplus Thesaurus, conferences, workshops and other news are presented.

The HUMBOLDT project is now entering its final phase, and the fourth newsletterexternal link, opens in new window has recently been published. The main issues are the current Open Source releases, HUMBOLDT meetings, User Involvement activities and the activation of the HUMBOLDT Training Platform. There are also information about ongoing activities and upcoming events.

The fifth newsletter from VESTA-GIS is now available at their web pageexternal link, opens in new window.It contains a detailed guide to the online mobility database (where newly graduated can upload their CVs for chances to get internships at organisations in Europe, and where organisations can post internship announces), information about important events regarding VESTA-GIS, an overview of the next events in field of GIS and two new partners to VESTA-GIS are introduced.

2008-08-24: ISPRS CATCON5 Gold  Award: The GIS Institute and its manager Professor Anders Östman have, together with the Berlin University of Technology, won the ISPRS first price for E-learning at the 21st congress in Beijing 2008. The price, CATCON5 Gold Award, was given for the work with the course packet of EduServ6 CityGML.

2008-04-02: Travel grant GIS 2008. The Swedish Mapping Agency announces, together with ESRI S-GROUP Sweden AB and Linfo Norrbotten, a grant in memory of Stefan Stenlund important and pioneering work in the GIS-techniques in Sweden. He worked in the Swedish Mapping Agency for more than 20 years and he was a pioneer in the GIS-technique. Last day for application is May 15, 2008.
