The inauguration of new professors at the University of Gävle is combined with the conferment of doctoral degrees every other year, and together they constitute the Academic Ceremony. The new professors present their research activities by holding inaugural lectures.
The tradition of the inauguration ceremony for new professors reaches back to the Middle Ages. At the University of Gävle, the new professors are inaugurated into office by the Vice-chancellor at the Academic Ceremony. In addition to the ceremonial act when the new professors are being welcomed into their new posts, their fields are given recognition as the new professors hold a short inaugural lecture where they present their research. These lectures are usually held in the week leading up to the ceremony and are open to the public.
