The FEKIS conference of 2019

Gävle University extends a warm welcome to the annual FEKIS conference of 2019, scheduled on the 16-17th of October, with the conference theme “business administrations contribution to a sustainable human living environment”

The English word economics is derived from the ancient Greek word “oikonomia” - meaning the management of a family or a household – and entail the management of limited resources. Since sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, the subject can be seen as vital in contributing to a sustainable living environment.

Despite the focus on the management of limited resources the subject occasional focus on profit maximization, needs creation and shortsighted decision-making has been criticized due to its mismatch with sustainability efforts. This poses questions regarding how business administration can balance societal needs of sustainability with an ever-increasing demand for short-term profits.

At this year’s conference we wish to discuss how business administrations contribution to a sustainable human living environment can be problematized, actualized and communicated. At the center lies the query of how business administration can be part of the movement towards a sustainable society, instead of being seen as part of the problem.

We pose three questions

  1. What is the role of the subject of business administration in the creation of a sustainable human living environment?
  2. What contribution can business administration offer to the societal sustainability discourse?
  3. What role can an academic institution take in the promotion of a sustainable human living environment?

Please note that we welcome suggestions for sessions that is based on other questions and queries, preferably with a clear connection to the conference theme. Such as sustainable leadership, sustainable markets and questions relating to warnings of going concern, to mention a few.
