PhD position in 3D Visualization and Interaction for Urban Planning

General information about the University of Gävle

University of Gävle (in Sweden) has approximately 14 500 students, more than 50 study programmes and second-cycle programmes. In 2010, the university received permission to carry out third-cycle programmes in the profile area of Built Environment. Built Environment and Health-promoting Working Life are the general research profiles of the University of Gävle including among others education and research in Spatial Planning with a specialization in Sustainable Built Environment.

Project description

This PhD position concerns investigating novel ways to simulate and interact with 3D urban environments for better support of and communication among city planners and citizens. A major application focus will be urban energy management; more specifically planning for solar energy production. A central objective is to use advanced 2D/3D modelling and visualizations of e.g. properties, buildings, and installations and thereby accomplishing scenario-based what–if-modelling for interactive exploration in the decision process. The research will include usability studies to investigate how advanced visualizations for interactive 3D planning can support decision-making by planners and what their effect is on the dialogue between city planners, citizens, and public administrators. This project has a clear technical focus and will be mainly concerned with algorithm design for simulation and visualization, with interaction design, and with experimental validation.

The project will be carried out in the Geospatial Information Science (GIS) research group at the department of Industrial Development, IT and Land Management under supervision of Prof. Stefan Seipel and Dr. Anders Brandt.

The academic environment

The GIS research group, which is part of the Faculty of Engineering and Sustainable Development, is a team of 15 researchers, three of which are professors. The research in our group is geared towards pushing forward the frontiers in geographical information technology and its use. In our interdisciplinary group we combine competences from computer science, applied geodesy, geomatics, big-data, visualization, and remote sensing. The group has well established collaborations with the Swedish Land Surveying Agency, as well as with FPX, which is northern Europe’s largest cluster organization in the GIS industry.
