Will everyone get the help they need...?

Mats Sjöstrand, f.d. generaldirektör, ordförande

One of our biggest challenges is to create long-term sustainable welfare. The University of Gävle works actively with these issues as part of our vision for a sustainable habitat. We now present our research within the field “Seniors” on this year’s "Research Friday"

Statisitk ålderskurva i befolkningen

We are all getting older

In twenty years’ time it has been calculated that ten percent of the population in Sweden will be eighty years old or older and geriatric care faces major challenges.

Have we any strategy for a sustainable welfare system, have we got the understanding that is needed and will everyone be able to get the help they need?

Vital to be able to stand and walk

When researchers have asked "seniors" about the most vital issue in their day-to-day life the answer is to be able to stand up and walk. A sedentary lifestyle and lack of outdoor activities has become a public health problem.

We also know that many want to live at home as long as they can, but the support needed when one runs out of energy and health deteriorates needs to be developed.

Nature and sex

Research also shows the value of contact with nature for general health throughout life. What chances do the elderly have of getting out to get exercise?

There are many myths about the elderly, for example about "seniors" and sex. The desire for sex is present in all age groups, but who asks "seniors" about their needs?

Lecturers:

  • Professor Jari Ristiniemi lectures on development of society and age-obsessed stereo types
  • Docent Per Öberg describes his research on intimate relations as one gets older
  • Britt-Marie Sjölund, PhD, has studied the physical and mental well-being of the elderly
  • Doctoral student Eva Dahlkvist researches on garden/patio design as a health enhancing resource within health and care
  • David Hallman, PhD, shares his understanding of the importance of physical activity versus sedentariness for neck complaints
  • Professor Gloria Macassa concludes the day in English with a lecture on Abuse and Health among Elderly in Europe.

In between the lectures there will be presentations of the EXO-LEGS (exoskeleton legs) that assist elderly persons’ mobility, and the student nurses high-tech clinical training facilities with state-of-the-art simulation manikins.

“Very encouraging that there has been such a lot of interest from the profession. We are fully booked and participants are coming from the whole of our region to this meeting between researchers, decision makers, professionals and the general public,” says Johanna Esplund, Communications Officer responsible.

Date: Friday the 30th of September
Time: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Place: The University Library, Krusenstjerna Hall (Kungsbäcksvägen 47)
