Gunilla Mårtensson appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Quality

Gunilla Mårtensson

“The University’s internal quality management is becoming of such an importance that I have decided to appoint a Deputy Vice-Chancellor for quality. Gunilla Mårtensson is very knowledgeable in the field, for example from her time as chair for the Faculty Board,” says Vice-Chancellor Maj-Britt Johansson.

A system change

The University of Gävle is currently facing a system change. The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) has earlier been assigned the task to evaluate quality within Swedish higher education institutions. However, now that responsibility has been transferred to the higher education institutions themselves.

Up till now, UKÄ has reviewed the quality of higher education at University of Gävle. Now that responsibility is ours. Instead, UKÄ will evaluate our internal quality assurance routines. For this reason, we need to develop processes to make sure that students’ actual performances correspond to the expected ones.

The next step is to demonstrate to UKÄ how we have carried out this review and in what ways we can guarantee that we will detect any deficiencies and improve such activities.

Our own quality system

We are going to build our own quality assurance system and UKÄ will then review our system. Instead of giving accounts of our programmes, we are going to give an account of our routines.

“The University’s internal quality management is going to be of such an importance that I have decided to appoint a Deputy Vice-Chancellor for quality. Gunilla Mårtensson is very knowledgeable in the field, for example from her time as chair for the Faculty Board,” says Vice-Chancellor Maj-Britt Johansson.

Three questions to Gunilla Mårtensson

  • Is there any question which is of pivotal importance in your work as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for quality?

“The purpose of systematic quality management is to develop and guarantee the quality of our education and research. I am convinced that this trust, which means that we ourselves take responsibility for this process, will develop our activities.”

  • What is the standing of education carried out by the University of Gävle?

“We are strong; the systematic quality management with a clear division of responsibilities we are about to implement will guarantee education of the highest quality possible in the future.”

  • Is there anything new going on in the area of education?

“I believe the new knowledge environments will act as uniting forces across disciplinary and faculty borders and as such will develop quality.”

Deputy Vice-Chancellors

The University of Gävle appoints Deputy Vice-Chancellors within areas that we would like to focus especially on. There are already two Deputy Vice-Chancellors in place: Bahram Moshfegh for research and Kaisu Sammalisto for sustainable development. Now, a deputy vice-chancellor for quality, Gunilla Mårtensson, is added to their numbers.
