University of Gävle is of one of six higher education institutions in the region that on 12 June signed an agreement on enhanced collaboration: “Lärosäten Öst” (Higher Education Institutions East). This collaboration aims to find common solutions and, in this manner, develop synergies.
Dalarna University, the University of Gävle, Mälardalen University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala University, and Örebro University earlier started to approach one another during discussions of a regional reorganisation of Sweden.
“There is a lot to gain in enhanced collaboration. For example, in specialist programmes each individual higher education institution finds it hard to provide skills sufficiently. To meet regional needs for skills and knowledge, we need to collaborate concerning long-term planning of research and education,” says Maj-Britt Johansson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gävle.
The agreement involves several different areas and will become important for the faculties, the administration and the libraries at all six higher education institutions.
“It may also concern programmes with few applicants at each higher education institution, but which are in strong demand on the job market. Then we can collaborate and guarantee that the programmes can start at least in one place”, Maj-Britt Johansson says.
For the higher education institutions, the agreement also opens up for the possibility to collaborate regarding support functions and common in-house training.
The agreement was signed at a meeting at Mälardalen University on 12 June.
