University of Gävle explores #metoo campaign in open debate on 26 October at noon

“We welcome students, members of staff and interested members of the public to an open debate,” says Sarah Ljungquist, head of subject in gender studies at the University of Gävle.

The hashtag #metoo has encouraged women to reveal in what ways they have been exposed to sexism in their everyday lives. The campaign has made it possible for women to talk about what has been considered shameful and unimportant.

The act of publically declaring “me too” has become a way to put sexism in the open as a structural problem, as a pattern that involves power relations.

However, in the wake of the campaign, there is a debate about the campaign itself.

“At the University of Gävle in this open debate at lunchtime, we would like to explore the #metoo campaign from two perspectives. First, we will focus on the actual campaign and its purpose to disclose the hidden sexism in society. Secondly, we will discuss the debate about the campaign itself,” Sarah Ljungquist explains.

“We welcome students, members of staff and interested members of the public to an open debate on these issues!”

  • Place: The University reception
  • Time: Thursday 26 October at 12.00
