Since 2014, the University in Gävle and Lishui University have had a partnership concerning contract education for nurses in China. The programme is four years long, and this summer the first batch of students graduated.

“All 84 students that began the programme also graduated, so everyone was delighted. This is a very valuable partnership, and it is a great outcome both for us and for them,” says Annakarin Olsson, registered nurse, teacher and assistant faculty programme director together with Mikaela Willmer.

Teachers regularly travel to China

The programme is a joint venture between the universities, with each university coordinating some of the courses. Fifteen people from the Faculty of Health and Occupational Studies are involved in the programme and periodically travel to China to teach the Chinese students in English.

On Wednesday, Ylva Fältholm met the representatives from China and she and Xiao Gang, President at the Lishui University signed an agreement confirming that the collaboration will continue.

"I have only worked here for a year but have understood that this collaboration with you is very successful. I'm pleased that we now renew our agreement so that it also includes cooperation on research", said Ylva Fältholm at the meeting.

Gifts were exchanged

The delegation from China has also met with employees at our University, visited Gävle Hospital and paid a visit to the new government agency for work environment awareness, MynAK. It was the agency’s Director-General Nader Ahmadi, former pro-vice-chancellor at the University, who initiated this partnership with China.

Xiao Gang handed a unique gift to Ylva Fältholm: a green vase designed by a famous artist in China. Ylva Fältholm also gave Xiao Gang a gift from Gävle: a Gävlebock in silver designed by the famous artist Gunnar Cyrén who also made the China for the Nobel Prize dinner.

Several of the nursing students in China have now also been admitted to the University of Aberdeen, an ancient university in Scotland, where they study at masters level.

Our Vice-Chancellor is planning a visit

After visiting Gävle, the delegation from China were going to Stockholm on a quick visit before moving on to Switzerland for a few days before traveling home to China.

"We would be very pleased if the Vice-Chancellor here wants to come and greet us in China so that we can repay your nice hospitality", said Xiao Gang.

Ylva Fältholm replied that it is on her list to visit Lishui University.

"We are definitely planning a visit. Internationalization is important and is on the agenda for all Swedish universities now. And then this type of collaboration is a good example.
