The University’s contributions in tackling the corona crisis

Help with distance education, hand sanitizer and protective visors to healthcare staff are a few examples of what the University of Gävle contributes with now in the corona crisis.

– As a University, we have an important mission to contribute with competence both in the short run and in the long run. In the short run, healthcare staff and medical equipment are central contributions, and, in the long run, it is about contributing to reconstructions and transitions in society. That depends on how hard society has been hit and in what ways. The University is an important social actor and we will contribute in the best way possible, says Annika Strömberg, Head of Faculty at the Faculty of Health and Occupational Studies at the University of Gävle.

Medical equipment that the University of Gävle has given to healthcare staff in Region Gävleborg:

  • 33 packages of gloves, each containing 150 pairs.
  • 12 packages of aprons, each containing 50.
  • 20 bottles of hand sanitizers and disinfectant solution.
  • Protective visors. The University has a 3D printer which manufactures protective visors to healthcare staff.

More contributions:

  • The University has 90 employees with medical training who could be used as a resource if needed, provided that the University can still fulfill its mission.
  • Between 60-70 students will graduate from our programme in nursing in the spring and next semester another 80-90 nurses will graduate. Around 30 specialist nurses are expected to graduate in June in, for example, intensive care and anesthesia.
  • Help with remote learning. The University of Gävle offers, together with Local Government Association Akademi Norr, teachers and educators in Västerbotten and Norrbotten free help with remote learning.
