The University’s recommendations regarding the corona virus

2020-03-12

The University's crisis management team has held meetings on the preparedness for the corona virus. The management is following developments and will update the information as soon as there is a change.

Corona virus (model).

The Public Health Agency of Sweden has raised the risk level for societal spread in Sweden to very high. This means that anyone with symptoms should limit social contacts where there is a risk of transmitting infection.

In order to protect students and employees, the University of Gävle has decided on the following recommendations:

  • Anyone with cold symptoms are strongly advised to stay home.
  • For health and safety reasons, all students and employees who have spent time in high risk areas are recommended to work or study from home for two weeks after returning home, regardless of whether they feel infected or not. As an employee, you need to contact your immediate manager and as a student your teacher/supervisor.
  • Employees or students who have been in contact with an infected person who has become sick with the corona virus are strongly advised to work or study from home for two weeks.
  • No work trips or exchanges shall be made to the areas that the Foreign Ministry advises against visiting.
  • All work trips must be booked with rebookable and refundable tickets.
  • As an employee or student, you should keep yourself up to date through the Foreign Ministry and the Swedish Public Health Agency of Sweden. Employees and students are encouraged to follow these recommendations from authorities.
  • Visits from a high risk area identified by the Foreign Ministry should be avoided.
  • At this time, the University's regular activities will not be changed. If you are healthy, you go to work or classes as usual. Planned examinations will be carried out.

In Sweden, The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Swedish Public Health Agency of Sweden are monitoring developments regarding the virus and making recommendations. The University's management follows these recommendations and does generally not issue its own recommendations, in part because the situation changes from day to day and from country to country and in part because expertise in the area is available at other authorities.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs currently advises against travel to China, Iran, Italy, parts of South Korea and Tyrol in Austria due to the virus (more detailed information can be found on The Ministry for Foreign Affairs's website).

The Public Health Agency of Sweden assesses the risk of general spread in Sweden as very high. This means that anyone with symptoms, including mild ones, should limit social contacts where the infection is at risk of spreading and that those working in the care of the elderly area should not go to work if they are experiencing symptoms of respiratory infection. Family members should also avoid unnecessary visits to hospitals and nursing homes.

At the moment there are no other restrictions that affect the University of Gävle's regular activities.

If you feel sick

Pay attention to flu symptoms such as fever, cough or difficulty breathing – especially if you have been in an infectious area. Stay home. Contact 1177 Vårdguiden for advice and assessment.

This applies to travel

No work trips or exchanges shall be made to the areas that the Foreign Ministry advises against visiting.

Contact 1177 Vårdguiden for advice and assessment if you feel sick and have been in a high risk area.

The University's management strongly recommends, for work environmental reasons as well, that employees or students who have been in the affected areas mentioned above work or study from home for two weeks after arrival in Sweden (voluntary quarantine). You should discuss this with your immediate manager (as an employee) or teacher/supervisor (as a student).

If you get sick during the period of work/study from home, contact 1177 Vårdguiden by phone and inform us of your symptoms and where you have travelled. Keep your manager or teacher/supervisor informed if you need to extend your time at home.

What to do if you have a booked business trip or planned exchange studies to an area where there is a risk of infection?

The University's management team is now urging caution when it comes to travelling abroad. There is a total travel ban to some high risk areas (as recommended by The Ministry for Foreign Affairs). Regarding travel to other countries/regions where infection has been identified, employees and students should consider whether a trip is really necessary or if there are other solutions.

No one who is concerned about travelling abroad should be forced to go. This also applies to areas that are not classified as high risk areas but where the infection is present. If an employee has a trip planned or booked and feels anxious, the manager should have a dialogue with the employee about trying to find an alternative solution. There is no requirement to travel even if the ticket is not rebookable.

If you need to travel as an employee; only book rebookable and refundable tickets, as the situation may change.

Students who have planned exchange studies in a high risk area should receive help to find a solution for studies at the University of Gävle instead.

Is our activity affected by the corona virus?

There is currently no reason to change the University's regular activities. If you are healthy, you go to work or classes as usual. Planned examinations will be carried out. The University's management team is aware that the situation can change and is following developments.

A special work group has been formed to monitor developments with the spread of corona. The University is prepared to make quick decisions on whether the activities at the University of Gävle will need to be restricted in some way.

What is happening to planned major conferences in Sweden?

The government has decided that no gatherings with more than 500 people may be held. Meetings with more than 500 people must therefore be cancelled.

As the person responsible for a conference or a larger meeting with fewer than 500 people, one should consider whether there is a deadline for setting as the authorities' recommendations can change.

How should you as an employee or student know if the situation changes and if the University's teaching or other activities are affected?

As far as the University's activities are concerned, management will continue to provide information. For employees this will primarily be done on the intranet and through managers. For students it will be done through the student pages on the web, hig.se, and via the electronic information boards available at the University.

Regarding more detailed information about the spread of the virus and about the situation abroad, the University is not the primary source.

As an employee or student, you should keep yourself up to date through The Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Public Health Agency of Sweden and WHO. Links can be found below:
