Study Programme for a Master of Engineering in Land Surveying 300 cr

The Study Programme for a Master of Engineering in Land Surveying is unique for Sweden. It concentrates on collection, handling, analysis and visualisation of geospatial data (information tied to a geographic location). Today, geospatial data is very important for societal development, for instance with respect to digitisation and climate change adaptation. Furthermore, the emergence of new technologies and global collaborations lead to an increasing demand for experts in the field of geospatial data. Thus, the job market is indeed prosperous.

About the studies

The Study Programme for a Master of Engineering in Land Surveying consists of five-year full time studies and results in a degree at Master level. It gives you knowledge in high demand and a deep understanding of geospatial data, land surveying (geodesy), GIS (Geographic Information Systems), computer programming, sustainable societal development and smart cities.

After two common years, you choose between two specialisations, either concentrating on technical land surveying or on GIS. Besides courses in the specific subject matter, a broad education is provided in for instance mathematics, computer science and the built environment. The study programme ends by writing a Master’s thesis in the last semester.

Specialisation in Technical Land Surveying
In this specialisation you concentrate on methods for collection of geospatial data, including both traditional and modern surveying methods (for instance GPS and other satellite techniques). Several courses deals with geodesy, i.e. with the science of measurements at or close to the Earth’s surface, which are then followed by applied courses in for instance photogrammetry, laser scanning, engineering surveying and remote sensing.

Specialisation in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Here you specialise in the analysis of geospatial data, particularly using GIS, but also in geovisualisation and development of various applications. The specialisation has its foundation in computer science with emphasis on the development and programming of different types of applications based on geospatial data.

After the studies

With a Master of Science Degree in Land Surveying you are well equipped to work as an expert on collection, handling, analysis and visualisation of geospatial data. The development of new surveying methods and data-driven geospatial applications for smart phones are examples of professional tasks. You will be able to contribute to sustainable development for public benefit and there are also extensive possibilities for innovation and entrepreneurship. Autonomous cars is one example, which puts high demands on both geospatial data and the positioning of the car.
