The first two years on the Study Programme in Spatial Planning is common to all and includes both spatial planning and geography. During year 3, there is a specialization in either planning or geography.

The course aims at deepening the understanding of how GIS works, both in theory and in practice. Topics covered include for example methods for data gathering in raster and vector environments, integration and conversions of different spatial data, editing and updating methods, raster and vector analyses, digital elevation modeling as well as graphical presentation of analysis results. Note that the course cannot be credited for if taken parallel with the course GIT in Land Management.

Urban Social Geography 7.5 cr

At the core of urban social geography lies the study of the interrelations between the physical and social environment of cities and the people inhabiting them. The aim of the course is to provide a broad introduction to the theory and methods used in urban and social geography. The course will examine several relevant topics, e.g. the issue of residential segregation, residential mobility, urbanism, identity, ethnicity, class, gender, inequality and conflicts in the city and ethical issues. This course also provides an introduction to scientific methods used in the field. This course is followed by the course Urban Studies.

The course focuses on sustainable development and gives a theoretical and practical background in the field of sustainable spatial planning. Specifically, the course focuses on the physical, social and economic factors that affect the development towards a sustainable urban future.

Design of the Built Environment 7.5 cr

Design in the Built Environment is a studio-based course that provides an introduction to develop the knowledge and skills to design a neighborhood within a spatial planning project. The course also give insight in different media of investigation and presentation, with the understanding of a set of tools used in the design process (both analog and digital). Throughout this course the students are able to examine the different ways in which the urban environment is shaped; how form, materials, lighting, and color affect the appearance of the city, how geographic factors, like solar lighting and topography impact the placing of new buildings, and much more.

The purpose of this course is to give the student training in satellite image interpretation and analysis as well as applying advanced GIS analysis on the results from the satellite image analyses within the field of land management.

Urban Studies 7.5 cr

The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the history and current developments in urban theory. The course is organized around three major themes. The first is the classical text of urban theory and the second theme is a look at the current research trends of urban studies. A third theme of the course is to discuss methodological issues.
The course will also provide a sufficient possibility for the participants to develop their skills in presenting results and thoughts both orally and written.

Natural Hazards and Risk Assessment 7.5 cr

The course treats different types of environmental hazards and their associated processes and consequences, especially in terms of the effects on spatial planning and the built environment.
Through the course the student shall acquire knowledge about those processes that create risk and vulnerable conditions for human life, as well as knowledge on how to mitigate or prevent such effects.
Course topics are for example: Natural hazards (e.g. volcanism, earthquakes, tsunamis, jökulhlaups, floods, hurricanes, landslides and other mass movements) and attitudes and preparedness of the society towards natural hazards. The course will apply basic methods for vulnerability and risk analysis for risk map production.

Regional Development 7.5 cr

The course provides deeper knowledge in the development of labor market regions, localization theories, regional expansion, cluster development, regional policy, rural development and the tension between growing regions and sparsely populated regions. The course uses statistical analysis methods to create conditions for knowledge-based regional development. After finishing this course, the student will have an understanding of the social, economic and political forces that create a region and how they can be used to develop a strategic plan for a sustainable region.
