Field Religious Studies

Religion for Secondary and Upper-secondary School Teachers (1-30) provides a basic introduction to religious studies. The course contains both subject studies and subject didactics. It consists of four modules, where religious studies are studied thematically in history and today based on Swedish, European and global perspectives. Module 1 has its starting point in the multi-religious Sweden. In module 2, Judaism, Christianity and Islam are studied as traditions, with a common origin and partly a common nucleus. Module 3 consists of Myths and Rituals from Ancient to Contemporary Times. Lastly, module 4 covers mysticism and psychology of religion.

Religion for secondary and upper-secondary school teachers (31-60) 30 cr

The continuation course in religious studies with a specialisation in didactics (31-60) covers subject areas that have not been discussed in the introductory course in religious studies (1-30). The continuation course consists of four modules. The course covers the relation between religion, nature and health, the interaction between humans' mental and moral maturity, based on different ethical and psychological theories, the religions of South and East Asia and the relation between religion and globalisation. Theoretical studies are alternated with didactic perspectives on teaching in school.

English for Teachers in Secondary Education (1-30) 30 cr

The main focus of the course is placed on developing the students' communicative skills in English, and to introduce basic concepts for analysis of language and literature. The communicative skills are exercised specifically through essay writing and editing. Theories of foreign language acquisition are also introduced, and connections between the academic subject and the school subject of English are made continuously.

Geometry and History of Mathematics 7.5 cr

The aim of the course is to:
· develop the knowledge of geometry and mathematical history
· acquire an understanding of the mathematical structure through Euclidean geometry
· through Euclidean constructions, create a didactic understanding of the relationship between figure - mathematical formulation
· learn about some major mathematical events and how they have influenced history, and how these problems affect the individual's mathematical concept formation
· gain knowledge of how to apply geometry in practice, by e g using ICT
· develop an understanding of group processes and how they control the mathematical learning.

Semester 2

English for teachers 30 cr

In this course, students further develop their ability to express themselves correctly in English, in both the linguistic and literary disciplines. Students are provided with an opportunity to understand the development of American and British literature in an historic perspective, with a focus on the relationship between form and content, the interrelatedness of literary texts, and the complex links between these texts and their historical contexts. The study of literary terminology continues with an introduction to such concepts of literary criticism as “canon”, “Self”, “discourse”, and “historicity”. Moreover, there is a comprehensive review of central aspects of linguistics, focusing on syntax, morphology, phonetics and phonology, semantics, sociolinguistics and pragmatics as well as language didactics and language acquisition and an overview of the history of the English language. An overview of the main linguistics research methods is presented along with a closer study of the main concepts in syntax. Students are given an opportunity to apply knowledge of linguistic topics and research methods by applying a research method to analyse a particular linguistic topic. The results are presented in an analytical essay which enables practice in scientific writing.

The teaching practice activities of this course are connected with the school subject of English from a pedagogical perspective. The course focuses on the student's ability to create opportunities for all pupils to learn and develop within the subject of English as stipulated in the curriculum goals. This course gives the student an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a teacher and on one's own development towards a professional conduct in relation with fellow teachers, students and parents.

English 61-90 credits is designed to increase proficiency skills through deeper critical and inter-disciplinary awareness of English linguistic and literary studies. Theoretical principles are applied in a student research paper focused in either English linguistics or literatures in English.

The course covers different religions and attitudes to life in modern society with relevance for religious education in secondary and upper-secondary school. How are our identities shaped and transformed in the contemporary culture? How does the religiosity and spirituality of people change? It is possible to adapt the choice of subject to the student. In addition to a method part, the course also includes a major thesis.
Religious Studies may constitute the main subject in a Bachelor of Arts, 180 HE credits, or an in-depth specialisation on the teacher programme, primarily for those who plan to teach in secondary and upper-secondary school.

The course discusses theories, methods and approaches within the field of teaching English in schools. Special emphasis is given to planning, carrying out, and presenting an advanced-level scholarly work based on language or literary studies, in connection with the teaching of English in grades 7-9. The course features the defense of the student's own paper and the critical review of another student's corresponding work. The search for scholarly publications and articles in databases and the consideration of general and research-related ethical questions within the study of English with an emphasis on didactics are also included in the course.
