Study Programme in Computer Science, 180 cr
Are you creative and enjoy complex challenges? Welcome to the Study Programme in Computer Science! This programme gives you a broad education in programming and software development. At the same time, you will study a number of courses on geographical information systems, GIS. In this way, the programme will provide you with great opportunities to have an exciting professional life.
Programming from the start
You do not need any experience in programming when you begin studying here. The most important thing is that you are curious. Programming is everywhere. No matter if it is a mobile phone, a computer, a coffee machine or an airplane—most things around us need software to function.
Soon you will have the knowledge needed to find smart solutions to current and future problems in computer science and technology. At the same time, you will be knowledgeable in geographic information. You can create programmes that are important for urban planning, fire monitoring purposes, blue lights, infrastructure, transportation or environmental monitoring.
About the programme
In your three years as a student, you will learn methods, problem solving, algorithms, programming, databases, web, graphics and geographical data. And quite a few other things that you will find useful in facing the future. You will work both individually and together with others. The programme grants a Bachelor of Science degree with computer science as your main field of study. As many of our courses integrate skills in GIS, the programme here at University of Gävle will provide you with a specific set of skills which is not easily found in programmes at other higher education institutions.
A broadening of the programme to include GIS
Geographical information systems focus on the collection, storing, analysis, presentation and visualization of geographical data and information. Today, we take it for granted that our mobile phone will show us our exact position or where to find the nearest pizzeria. But GIS is much more than that. It is used as a tool to tackle major societal challenges like, for example, to measure our glaciers, to fight forest fires, to interprete satellite data and to identify trends in our society.
A central place within GIS
Here in Gävle, many GIS actors, researchers and companies whose tools are world-leading, like Lantmäteriet and ESRI, gather. Already as a student, you will be part of the line of business, for example through guests lectures, projects and study visits.
Many of the courses that you study within the programme are connected to GIS. Courses that specialise in visualization, image processing and image analysis are included. When you visualize, you create images that make data easy to comprehend for others. In image analysis, you use digital images to understand what is happening.
You are in demand on the labour market
The demand for computer science skills is very high and is expected to grow. When you have graduated, you will have a broad knowledge in the field, and you can work within a number of possible areas that focus on the development of software and software systems. You will also have a specialisation on developments that use geographical information. There are also opportunities for an international career.
Many professions to choose among
Our students work in a variety of professional roles, for examples as programmers, application developers, IT/GIS specialists, system analysts, technical project managers, web designers, IT technicians, IT consultants, in IT support etcetera.
Continue with your studies
Would you like to continue to widen and deepen your knowledge? After your graduation, you can apply to a Master’s programme. At University of Gävle, there is for instance a Master’ programme in geospatial information science. After that, you will have the opportunity to aim for a career as a researcher.
