Library Borrowing terms

Register as a borrower

By registering as a borrower, you accept our terms for borrowing items and promise to comply with them. You also allow the library to process your personal data so that you can borrow items and we can contact you. Please bear in mind that borrowing terms may be updated and that any changes will be published on this webpage.

Library card

• To borrow books from the library, you need to be registered as a borrower and have a library card.
• Keep your contact details such as e-mail, telephone number, and address up to date.
  
• If you lose your library card, please notify the library immediately so that it can be blocked.
• The library card is a personal document of value. You are responsible for all items checked out with your library card until they are deregistered.

Borrowing, renewing, and returning items

• You borrow books at the self-issue machines or at the information desk.
• Distance students at University of Gävle who live in Sweden but not in Gävle Municipality can have books sent to them by post. Please note that you must pay for the return postage.
• A loan can be renewed if no one has reserved the book. You can renew loan items yourself in the library catalogue. You can also call or e-mail the library to renew your loans.
• Loans that cannot be renewed must be returned no later than by the due date. Bear this is mind if you are travelling or if you return the book by post to the library.
• If you return books in the book drop outside the library, they will not be deregistered until the library staff is back on duty.

Loan periods, renewals, and late fees

• Course books can be borrowed for 14 days. The late fee is 10 kronor per book and day.
  
• Other books can be borrowed for 28 days.
• Reference books and journals cannot be checked out.
  

Invoicing in case of unreturned or damaged items

• If you have a late fee of 50 kronor, your library account will be blocked, and you will no longer be able to borrow or reserve books.
• You are not allowed to underline in or write notes in the library’s books. You may not repair a damaged book yourself.
• If the book has been damaged, you will be liable to pay for its replacement.
• If the book is not returned despite overdue notices, we will send you an invoice. Unpaid invoices will go to debt collection.
• If the borrowed book is returned after invoicing, the invoice will be cancelled but you must still pay the late fee.

Interlibrary loans (loans from other libraries)

If you are interested in borrowing a book or a journal that we do not have in our collection, we can borrow such items from another library.

• Only items intended for research or study can be borrowed from another library.
• Only students and staff at University of Gävle or students from other higher education institutions can use our interlibrary loan services.
• Interlibrary loans must always be picked up when the information desk is staffed.

How the library processes personal data

The library handles your personal data to enable you to borrow and reserve books and other library materials. The data recorded in the library’s system are: name, personal identity number, e-mail address, telephone number, and home address.

• Personal data is processed in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR, (EU Regulation 2016/679).
• Your personal data is only used to handle your loans and to contact you.
• You have the right to know what data we have stored about you.
• You have the right to close your library account if all items have been returned and all charges have been paid.
• If you stop using the library, your data will automatically be deleted from the library’s system after a period of time

Library Privacy

Data on borrowing, reservations or other forms of ordering and use of information technology by individuals is governed by Chapter 40, Section 3 of the Public Access to Information and Secrecy Act (2009: 400).
