Reference management with Mendeley

Mendeley is a reference management software that you can use to save your references and then insert them into a document.

Getting started with Mendeley

  • Create an account at
  • N.B. When creating a new account or logging into Mendeley on the web, you should always use an email address and a custom password.
    Do not use login by institution, organization or (Open) Athens!
    Additionally, it is not currently possible to log in to Mendeley Desktop with a login associated with an organization.

Mendeley Desktop is installed on all the computers in the Library and in the public computer rooms.

When using Mendeley you can

  • Import references from bibliographic databases.
  • Import PDF files and create a reference from the information within the file.
  • Insert citations in a text document.
  • Create a bibliography for your essay or article.
  • Share your references with others.
  • Communicate with other within academia.
