Department of Humanities

We offer programmes and courses that prepare you as a student, both in a general and specific manner, for a professional life in the cultural arena, widely speaking. We educate communicators, public relations officers, and writers within different fields. We also educate future teachers, from preschools levels all the way up to upper secondary schools. Our programmes and courses provide you with career skills essential to working broadly with issues concerning cultural encounters and on how to apply an informed, gender-critical perspective.

Subjects

In Media and communication studies, we study media from a number of perspectives—including historical, practical and theoretical ones.

In Religious studies, we study the various expressions and cultural meanings of religion from both a contemporary and a historical perspective.

Courses in Gender Studies focus on an analysis of historical conceptions of sex, gender and sexuality as well as on a theoretical problematisation of these and other concepts which have been, and remain, fundamental to gender studies.

English and Swedish are central to teacher education at the University of Gävle. In our courses in English, you develop your knowledge of, and proficiency in, this multifaceted language and we offer you a thorough grounding in the English language, literature and culture. In Swedish, we offer first and second cycle courses, as well as courses in Swedish as a second language.

Programmes

The ability to handle communication and information with the help of a balanced, contextual analysis is acquired at the Media and communication programme. You are given the opportunity to develop the ability to deal with communication problems efficiently so as to select the right message to communicate, which is a valuable skill in great demand.

The programme Humans - Culture - Religion provides you with the competence to work with issues concerning cultural encounters, which is useful in social and cultural contexts as well in those where caring for people is in focus.
