Physical activity and stress

Data from clinical and applied research indicates that disruptions in the regulatory functions of the autonomic nervous system are a significant factor in the pathogenesis behind chronic pain and musculoskeletal complaints.

Physical activity can reduce the risk of somatic diseases and pain as well as increase well-being. Stress, on the other hand, leads to an imbalance in the body's regulatory system and the development of chronic pain. It may, therefore, be important to understand the combined effect of physical activity and stress on autonomic regulation in relation to the well-being of the individual.

This programme includes studies of physical activity patterns and perceived stress and pain among people with musculoskeletal complaints. With the help of advanced portable equipment, we study whether stress and pain affect the physiological reactions to physical and mental strain, during and outside of work.

One research effort is dedicated to discovering combinations of physical and mental tasks which can benefit both physical and mental performance.

Research in this program

  • Stressrelaterade avvikelser i sympatetisk-parasympatetisk reglering som patofysiologisk basis av musculoskeletala besvär. Stress och daglig fysisk aktivitet.
  • Experimentell studie med fokus på prestationsförmåga, trötthetsutveckling och återhämtning. Interaktion av fysiska och mentala belastningar.
  • Fysisk aktivitet och stressens effekt på kroppen. Självrapportering och objektiv mätning med relation till yrke, kön, ålder.
  • Effekt av fysisk belastning och stress på neurofysiologiska markörer av uppmärksamhet, koncentrationsförmåga, minne och trötthetsutveckling.
  • Långvarig HRV (hjärtfrekvens variabilitet) monitoring i olika yrkesgrupper. Kartläggning av aktivitet på jobbet och på fritid.
