Since January 1, 2003, the Higher Education Ordinance requires a qualification in teaching and learning in higher education in order to obtain a permanent post as senior lecturer or lecturer (chapter 4, section 7 and section 9).
The reasons for these regulations are many, e g the considerable expansion of the academic first-cycle programmes to address the increased demands of today's society and the working life on more and more citizens' competence and skills, and also that the scientific perspective on higher education, both nationally and internationally, has shifted from a teaching to a learning perspective.
The purpose of the teaching and learning in higher education is to contribute to a high quality in all teaching at the university and higher education institutions, by making sure that the lecturers develop knowledge, skills and approaches as a basis for the professional practice as teachers in the higher education institution (teaching and learning in higher education).
Thus, the qualifying courses in teaching and learning in higher education at Högskolan i Gävle are part of making sure that the teachers at the higher education institution lives up to the requirements stated by the Higher Education Ordinance, and also to improve the quality of all education at Högskolan i Gävle through increased educational awareness and skills of the teachers. The qualifying courses - Course for Teachers in Higher Education, 6 HE credits and - Perspectives on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 9 HE credits are intended for new teachers, doctoral students and teachers already working at the higher education institution, but who have not yet had occasion to attend any educational courses.
