Summary

The purpose of this proposal is to investigate numerically and experimentally the air-flow and temperature patterns as well as the air quality and thermal comfort of a new ventilation concept for industrial premises. The new ventilation system, with appellation Impinging Jet (IJ), is based on high momentum jet directed downwards along the wall before impinging on the floor resulting in a jet distributing air along the floor. The flow and thermal behaviour of the IJ along the wetted wall, over the floor and in the occupied zone will be investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experiment. Experimental investigation will be used for validation of the numerical predictions and to identify the boundary conditions for numerical simulations. To assess the effectiveness of the IJ system for non-industrial ventilation, the effectiveness for heat removal (?t) and contaminant removal (?c) are used together with the predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD) for thermal comfort and the percentage of dissatisfied (PD) for air quality in order to define the Air Distribution Index (ADI). In addition, as the PD for air quality is not applicable for industrial premises were production related contaminants is the main design criterion, the effectiveness in which airborne contaminant target levels are fulfilled will be evaluated. The thermal comfort and indoor air quality as well as the energy use of the IJ system will be compared with the conventional displacement and mixed ventilation systems. The energy performance will be evaluated by comparing the specific fan power needed for each of the ventilation system.
