Niclas Björsell

Forskningsämne: Elektroteknik

Niclas Björsell är vetenskaplig ledare för det strategiska forskningsområdet Intelligent Industri och ämnesföreträdare för elektroteknik och fysik.

Han har över 30 års erfarenhet från forsknings- och utvecklingsprojekt, både nationellt och internationellt och främst i samarbeten mellan näringslivet och akademin. Han har en licentiatexamen i reglerteknik från Uppsala Universitet samt Tekn.dr. i telekommunikation från Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH). År 2012 utnämndes han till docent i telekommunikation vid KTH och mellan 2012 -2015 var han gästprofessor vid Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Han har publicerat mer än 100 artiklar (varav minst 75 är registrerad i Scopus) och hans forskningsintressen omfattar automation, mätteknik, prediktivt underhåll, robotik och trådlös kommunikation.

Han undervisar i kurser som relaterar till forskningsintressen och har nyligen avslutat ett projekt om kompetensutveckling och livslångt lärande inom intelligent industri.

AKTUELL FORSKNING

Just nu är Niclas Björsell engagerad i två forskningsprojekt

Prediktivt underhåll ur ett systemperspektiv

Effektivt underhåll är avgörande för de flesta operationer; underhållsaktiviteter förlänger utrustningens livslängd, förbättrar tillförlitligheten och förhindrar försämring. Därigenom definieras den som en av de innersta cirklarna i en cirkulär ekonomi. Industriellt underhåll är i grunden reaktivt, korrigerande och förebyggande, med hänsyn inte till den enorma mängden data som genereras på affärsgolvet eller den tillgängliga nya digitala tekniken som har dykt upp de senaste åren. För att vara proaktiv och förutsägbar kan underhållsstrategier dra nytta av framväxande digitaliserade tekniker som avancerad dataanalys, maskininlärning, big data och cloud computing för att samla in, lagra och analysera tillgänglig data.

Projektet fokuserar på digitaliserat underhåll i processindustrin i allmänhet och stålindustrin i synnerhet. Dessa industrier skiljer sig i viss utsträckning från tillverkningsindustrin, eftersom det är vanligt att ha produktionsenheter som gradvis och kontinuerligt bearbetar råvaror genom olika sammankopplade delsystem till slutprodukterna. Optimering av underhåll för ett enskilt delsystem betyder inte nödvändigtvis det optimala för en kontinuerlig process. I processindustrin leder ett stopp i ett delsystem ofta till att hela processkedjan stoppas. Projektet lägger till ett nytt tänkande med ett systemperspektiv som är extra viktigt i processindustrin.

Även om analyser av data är viktiga kommer de inte att vara användbara om inte analyser kan återföras till operatörer och beslutsfattare för att fatta rätt beslut om åtgärder. Visualiseringar i 2D och 3D har tidigare föreslagits som kraftfulla verktyg för intelligent underhåll. Systemets perspektiv innebär dock en ökad komplexitet, inte minst för dem som måste fatta beslut baserat på genererade data. På grund av komplexiteten i de data som samlas in från processen och på grund av de sammanflätade karaktären hos de involverade delsystemen är det avgörande att data visualiseras på ett effektivt sätt som möjliggör förståelse för operatörer och underhållspersonal som gör det möjligt för dem att diagnostisera status av systemet och att fatta välinformerade beslut.

Detta projekt involverar tre ledande stålföretag OVAKO, Sandvik SMT och SSAB tillsammans med ABB och Högskolan i Gävle. Genom att gemensamt utveckla och utvärdera metoder för förutsägbart underhåll och visuellt beslutsstöd samt implementera det på industriella kontroll- och övervakningssystem skapas förutsättningar för prediktivt underhåll av samarbetsmaskiner.

IDUN – Intelligent digitaliserat underhåll

Industrins digitalisering skapar nya möjligheter för SME inom flera olika områden. Detta projekt avser att fokusera på möjligheterna till ett effektivare underhåll i befintlig produktion, nya tjänster för underhåll och underhållsplanering, mervärde för produkter samt att skapa en attraktiv arbetsplats för en breddad personalgrupp. Det övergripande målet är att framför allt små och medelstora företag inom regionen skall öka konkurrenskraft och sysselsättning. På sikt leder det till positiva effekter på humankapital, innovationsförmåga, ekonomisk lönsamhet, cirkulär ekonomi som regional attraktivitet. Projektet inleds med en inventering i syfte att identifiera vart företaget befinner sig i digitaliseringsprocessen idag och vart man vill vara i framtiden Därefter genomförs fyra arbetspaket: (i) En aktivitet baserad på deltagardriven kompetensutveckling, (ii) att med hjälp av maskininlärning ta fram digitala tvillingar som kan användas för ett prediktivt underhåll. (iii) Prediktivt underhåll, där vi skattar återstående livslängd och därmed underhållsbehov. (iv) Det sista arbetspaketet består i att kommunicera resultat till en operatör och/eller underhållsplanerare. Inom projektet kommer ett flertal fallstudier att genomföras hos medverkande SME företag.
