João Gomes completed a 5 years Engineering Degree at New University of Lisbon (UNL) in 2005, proceeding after to Cardiff University in UK. João completed a Master Thesis in Management of Environmental Systems in 2008 also at UNL, based on his work at European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. During his 3 years at CERN, João worked on a flat plate solar panel under ultra high vacuum, and discovered a passion for solar energy, which led him to work at Lund University, where João worked with the Solarus photovoltaic thermal collector (PVT). After this, João started working as a research director at Solarus Rewables AB (2010 to 2020). During this period, he also did an Industrial PhD within the REESBE doctoral program, which he concluded in 2021. His PhD thesis is focused on the benefits and disadvantages of PVT solar collectors.

João also worked at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique for 6 months. João's first funded project at HiG was based on the Mozambican experience, and concerned the planning of a solar laboratory in India in 2013, which was funded by Tillväxtverket (266kSEK). With this project, João discovered a passion for project management and project applications. Over the years, João has brought in several funded projects to HiG such as: RES4Build (H2020, 150k€), Design and construction of a C-PVT collector (Eureka Eurostars, 110k€), Imperative (Vinnova, 64kSEK), PowerUpMyHouse (22k€), Digi4Food (Vinnova, 300kSEK), IPV4Europe (Vinnova, 283kSEK), Heatwise (RIA, Horizon Europe, 175k€), PVT4EU (CETPartnership, 1.46MSEK), RESILIENT (Energimyndigheten, 2 PhD students), PVExperts (Erasmus+ action, 78k€), AIM (Erasmus+ Action, 74k€), SHIP4India (Vinnova, 100kSEK)

João´s fields of interest are renewable energies focused in solar, sustainability and project management.
