Forskningsämne: Miljövetenskap

Stephan Barthel är föreståndare för ett utmaningsdrivet forskningsprogram om hållbarhet i städerna vid Högskolan i Gävle. Projektet har uppdraget att stimulera integrationen av socio-teknisk miljöforskning med den social-ekologiska stadsforskningen. På så sätt syftar detta strategiska forskningsprogram till att utveckla ett helhetsperspektiv på hållbar stadsutveckling inom Antropocen, med det unika målet att skapa "bio-socio-tekniska lösningar" för att förbättra stadens motståndskraft, samtidigt som man strävar efter hållbarhetsövergångar med globala konsekvenser. Vidare har det uppgift att översätta akademisk forskning i transdisciplinära samarbeten och medskapande projekt med aktörer utanför akademin.
