Welcome to the department of English studies!
My name is Britta Larson Bergstedt and I will be your course coordinator for English. Please make sure you click all the links and read all the information in this welcome letter carefully. If you have questions, you can contact me by email at email@example.com .
You will study three modules in total within this 15 hp course.
English didactics 7.5 credits (Week 45-02)
Basic language structure 3.5 credits (Week 45-49)
Children’s literature 4 credits (Week 50-02)
Starting week 45 you will have classes in both Basic Language Structure and English Didactics. These modules run in parallel weeks 45-49. Your last class in Basic Language Structure is week 49. Starting week 50 you will continue with classes in English Didactics and and also begin classes for Children’s Literature. The two modules run in parallel until the end of term.
The schedule for the modules can be found in the timetable service Kronox no later than four weeks before the course starts. Please note that the campus and distance courses have different schedules.
Students attending courses in English at the University of Gävle are required to attend class in order to receive a passing grade. Studying English at our college does not only involve obtaining subject knowledge, but also improving one’s ability and confidence to speak and write English. This can only take place if students meet their teachers and each other and actively participate in the instruction. Furthermore, most modules feature live, face-to-face, group work in order to fulfil general course objectives. Failure to participate in such activities will therefore make it impossible to reach the goals of the course. For these reasons, we require attendance, with only minor exceptions. To take exams and pass the course, students must attend all obligatory seminars.
The Covid-19 restrictions that are in place for the second half of the autumn term and the recommendations from HIG will determine whether all or parts of this course will be held on-campus.
Each module has at least three obligatory seminars. Dates and times for the exams and seminar presentations will be posted on Canvas. Study guides for the different modules, including timetables with reading instructions, will also be posted on Canvas two weeks before the module begins.
Since this is a full-time course, you must be prepared to allocate 40 hours of study per week, including class attendance, reading and writing assignments. Studying for 30 credits in one term is equivalent to a full-time job.
To participate fully in this course, it is important that you prepare well for the seminars by reading the designated parts of the course literature. You should be able to discuss particular models and issues brought up in the literature rather than topics in general. Therefore, make sure you order the course literature for all modules well before the course starts. You will not be able to access the course page on Canvas until Week 43, but the literature list can be found in the course plan which is part of this welcome letter.
In the Children’s Literature module there are many children’s books on the list and it might seem redundant to read all of them, but since it is necessary to read a large variety of books to see patterns and make well-grounded choices, we strongly recommend that you read as many as possible. However, you are allowed to replace a few titles with children’s books of your own choice. Use public libraries or share books to keep the cost down, but do not be afraid to invest in a few or several titles yourself. This is a way of starting your own collection of picturebooks that you can use in your future language classroom.
Please note that Lundberg’s "De första årens engelska" and Sandström’s "Kidworthy Works" are not children’s books but required reading material in the module. All books in Basic Language Structure and English Didactics are required reading material.
You will be automatically registered on Canvas when you register on the course. This is our main channel for communication and where you will find material about our course such as the timetable, instructions, assignments, etc. This is also where the instructors will post general announcements concerning each module and the individual sessions. Therefore, check the Canvas course page regularly.

If the Covid-19 restrictions or recommendations include distance learning, we will meet in our virtual classroom via Zoom. If digital-based learning is required, it is recommended that you use broadband and not a wireless connection. It is also important that you use a good headset with a microphone instead of the microphone on the computer only. A good web camera is also essential for communicative purposes. Please note that you will be expected to use your microphone and camera in any digital meetings or exams or seminars where you are to actively participate. Unfortunately, Ipads and Iphones do not often work sufficiently for this activity.
The syllabus (kursplan) is a legally binding document for teachers and students alike. Students should therefore refrain from requesting instructors to change the course content or shorten the reading list, for example. There is a separate link in the welcome letter to the course plan.
Cheating and plagiarizing are serious academic offences, which result in failing the module in question and being reported to the college’s disciplinary commission. To learn about plagiarism and get basic information on how to avoid it, please read the disclaimer posted on Canvas carefully before the beginning of the course; print it, sign it, make a copy/take a picture, and upload it to Canvas.
Registration for exams, including re-takes, is mandatory. You can register for exams via Ladok. You need to register at least ten days before the exam date. If you didn't register in time, you can not take your exam. No exceptions are made from this rule, we do not accept registrations when the deadline is passed.
If you are a distance study student and want to take your exam off-campus, you need to apply to do so at least three weeks prior to the exam date.
After your course has finished you will be sent a web-based course evaluation questionnaire via e-mail. Your participation in the course evaluation is very valuable to us and your comments will help improve and develop the course further. All students registered on the course will receive a report of the course evaluation with all comments compiled.
You need to apply for accommodation yourself. Please remember to do it in good time before your arrival. The University of Gävle does not provide any student accommodation.
As a student at the University of Gävle you have the opportunity to install
Microsoft Office on up to five computers. The Office package includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Onenote.
The library is located in the middle of campus and is open to everybody. You can reach all digital resources such as e-books and e-journals after logging in with your user account.
At the Student Centre you will meet knowledgeable staff that can assist you in just about anything regarding your studies at the University of Gävle. The Student Centre is located in building 22. You will also find a café in this area and TV displays showing current information and the daily timetabling. Eduroam (EDUcation ROAMing) gives you access to the Internet when you are staying on the University campus. It also provides internet access at other universities and colleges that are connected to eduroam. Eduroam also works at many airports, railway stations and hotels.
