Welcome to English 1-30, 50% distance!

This spring semester, you will be studying three modules as follows: “Contemporary Literature in English” will be taught in the first part of the semester (weeks 4-13 or period 3), "Culture, Ethnicity, Identity" will be taught in the second half of the semester (weeks 14-19, period 4), and “World English” will be taught in the last four weeks of the semester. In the fall, you will study “Language Structure” and “Written Communication”.
In keeping with the principles of continuous assessment, all modules feature compulsory assignments throughout their respective periods. More information about the content and assessment procedures for individual modules will be published by the instructors on the course site on Blackboard. Both modules include student participation in their assessment procedures. The teaching usually consists of lectures and seminars, but each module has its own structure and policy with respect to the forms of teaching. A good idea is to get hold of the books indicated in the syllabus (kursplan) as soon as possible. In the Contemporary Literature module, you will read and study the following texts:
Achebe, Chinua. Things Fall Apart
Walker, Alice. The Color Purple
Haddon, Mark. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
Desai, Anita. “Scholar and Gypsy”, a short-story from the volume Games at Twilight
McCourt, Frank. Angela’s Ashes
Malouf, David. Remembering Babylon.
Students attending courses in English at the University of Gävle are required to attend class in order to receive a passing grade. Studying English at our college does not only involve obtaining subject knowledge, but also improving one’s ability to speak and write in English, and this can only take place if students meet their teachers and actively participate in the instruction. Furthermore, most modules feature live, face-to-face, group work in order to accommodate the general course objective that “students should be able to compare and critically evaluate one’s own and others' work”. Failure to participate in such activities will therefore make it impossible to attain a course objective. For these reasons, we require attendance, with only minor exceptions. To take exams and pass the course, students must attend at least eight seminars in Contemporary Literature in English, three in World English, and four in Culture, Ethnicity, Identity. The Literature classes are scheduled on Tuesdays, from 15:00 to 17:30. The class schedules for the other modules will be published on Blackboard.
Your full commitment to studying this course is crucial. If you have registered but changed your mind about studying this course, you should immediately inform our administrator, Monika Karlsson, that you wish to be removed from the course list; there are applicants on the reserve list who could be admitted to the course. If you continue to be registered with the course without being an active student, that is, without attending classes and submitting assignments and other types of work to Blackboard, everybody loses, but especially those applicants on the reserve list who might have had a chance to be admitted to the course.

We will have a mandatory roll-call on Monday, January 20, at 16:00. The session will be online on Zoom. You only need to copy this link to your browser https://hig-se.zoom.us/j/441685170 and have your microphones and webcams ready. Attendance to the roll call session is mandatory. If you cannot attend but are committed to studying this course, contact me via e-mail (iulian.cananau@hig.se) before the meeting takes place and briefly explain in writing why you want to study English. Please note that it is important that you let us know as soon as possible if you do not want to take this course. The reason is that we have a large number of reserves waiting for a chance to take the course.

Communication

It is important that you enroll in the course on Blackboard, which will be our main channel for communication. This is where you will find information, such as detailed course descriptions, class schedule, teaching materials, course requirements and assignments. Your instructors will use the email client to send individual messages whenever necessary, so you should check the Blackboard course site and your e-mail regularly.
All the meetings for this course are online; most of our classes will take place in "online classrooms" via the web conferencing system Zoom. Access to the digital classrooms will be provided through links posted on the course site on Blackboard, and you do not need to download any special software. For all of us to be able to benefit from a good quality of reception, it is recommended that you use a broadband, and not a wireless connection. It is also important that you have a good headset, a microphone, and a webcam to be able to fully participate in the Zoom sessions. We recommend that you use desktop computers or laptops; cellphones, IPads and tablets do not work as well.
If you need technical support with Blackboard and Zoom, contact HiG’s support service. To learn more about Zoom and test your equipment, check this info page out: https://www.hig.se/Ext/En/University-of-Gavle/Library/Learning-Center/Web-meetings-with-Zoom.html.
