Dear student, you are most welcome to the course Advanced Management. We design the teaching sessions to be interactive so you will have the opportunity for discussions, feedback, case studies or application of your own and others´ experience to the topic under review.

This module aims to introduce and assist students to understand what leadership is in complex organisations and the importance of interaction between groups in working places. The course provides students with theoretical knowledge of leadership and the main goal is to give students the possibility to understand why leadership is important for organisations studies.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:

Demonstrate knowledge and thorough understanding on contemporary complex leadership issues

Demonstrate specialised knowledge on strengths and weaknesses of leadership

Demonstrate knowledge on how to develop innovative organisation cultures, fostering creativity and empowerment

Critically analyse and examine organisations and the role of leadership in a historical and contemporary times perspective

Demonstrate methodological knowledge and be exposed in current research in the field of Complex leadership

Autonomously identify and formulate problems assessing the importance of leadership issues in managing business

Demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge and analyse, assess and deal with complex issues even with limited information

Demonstrate skills required to participate in research in the field of leadership

Demonstrate the ability in critical thinking, independent work, teamwork, research and oral and written communication skills with different audiences

Judgement and approach

Demonstrate the ability to make assessments in the field of complex leadership and its role in the society

Demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research work and its role for business and society

Demonstrate the ability to identify personal needs for further knowledge and take responsibility for the own learning.


This is a half-time course with a weight of 7, 5 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) points. The course runs between weeks 4 and 13, 2020. We start 2020-01-20 in room 31:217.

You will work in teams/groups. Each group should consist of 2-3 students (it depends on how many we will be). We will build groups during the first day we meet and the same team works with all assignments.

This course has five separate examination moments and as a participant, you need to pass all of them. For passing an examination, it is required to get 50% of the maximum points. In teamwork, we grade the members of the group both together and individually. Individual performance is important and will be evaluated during the seminars, discussions and participations. The seminars and attendance will show a participant’s individual performance while team works are intended to demonstrate how efficiently students can solve problems by joint efforts. If you cannot participate in the seminars (only for some special reason), you must do an alternative assignment. All scores from exams will be added for the final grading, calculated on a total of 100 points.

We divide the major elements of this course into five parts:

(1) Building groups autonomously, presentation of your aim with the composition of the group, writing about the group and active participation in a seminar, gives maximum 10 points

(2) Article analysis of one article about complex leadership theory, gives maximum 10 points

(3)Literature review of one theme and chapter in the course book, gives maximum10 points

(4)Conducting research and writing a scientific work about a theme (the chapter you have been assigned) you will be assigned gives maximum 50 points

(5)Written home examination gives maximum 20 points

All assignments will be finished and uploaded under safe assign on blackboard latest week 13, Friday the 3rd of April. A complementary seminar will be organised at 7/4 for rest presentations.

The final grading of the course will be as you can see below, the ECTS system is used: < 0-35 = F, 36-49 = Fx, 50-59 = E, 60-69 = D, 70-79 = C, 80-89 = B, 90-100 = A.

Written exams

Written exams

Registration for exams, including re-takes, is mandatory. You can register for exams via Ladok. You need to register at least ten days before the exam date. If you fail to register you will only be able to sit your exam if there is a n empty place in the exam hall.

If you are a distance study student and want to take your exam off-campus, you need to apply to do so at least three weeks prior to the exam date.

Free Microsoft Office

As a student at the University of Gävle you have the opportunity to install
Microsoft Office on up to five computers. The Office package includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Onenote.

  • Library

The library is located in the middle of campus and is open to everybody. You can reach all digital resources such as e-books and e-journals after logging in with your user account.

  • Residence permit
    • If you are a non-EU citizen you need to apply for a residence permit. Start the process of applying for a residence permit as soon as possible. This can be a slow process and take several months. It is therefore good to get started as soon as possible!

Student Centre

At the Student Centre you will meet knowledgeable staff that can assist you in just about anything regarding your studies at the University of Gävle. The Student Centre is located in building 22. You will also find a café in this area and TV displays showing current information and the daily timetabling. Wireless network (wifi)

Eduroam (EDUcation ROAMing) gives you access to the Internet when you are staying on the University campus. It also provides internet access at other universities and colleges that are connected to eduroam. Eduroam also works at many airports, railway stations and hotels.
