The Rainbow Flag is Raised During Gävle Pride
By raising the rainbow flag during Gävle Pride from August 15-18, the University of Gävle aims to highlight the importance of standing up for one another and collectively raising our voices for the equal value of all people, everyone’s right to be who they are, and the right to love whom they choose.
The university plays a crucial role in making LGBTQIA+ issues visible, both in terms of research and education, but above all in creating an inclusive work environment for students and staff. This work continues year-round and is symbolized by the flag-raising during Gävle Pride.
"The University of Gävle has a great responsibility to ensure that our study and work environment is LGBTQI-inclusive. High-quality education and research require equal conditions and everyone’s equal rights and opportunities," says Kajsa Svaleryd, Equal Opportunities Coordinator at the university.
The flag-raising demonstrates the university’s commitment to creating a safe and accepting environment for LGBTQIA+ students, researchers, and teachers. Over the past year, the university has contributed to the Swedish Agency for Work Environment Expertise's work in developing a research-based guide to creating an inclusive work environment. Preparations are also underway to collaborate with the Gefle Student Union to create an inclusive orientation week for new students.
Three Tips for LGBTQI-Inclusive Work
- Increase your knowledge of the living conditions of LGBTQI people; there are several online courses and research on LGBTQI issues.
- Use inclusive language.
- Reflect on the norms that influence you and the assumptions you make about gender and sexuality.
