"I love the environment! Students create the future"
Kajsa Svaleryd, who works as the Equality, Diversion and Inclusion officer, thrives in an environment where students are building the future. This role involves a mix of tasks, and her colleagues are curious and responsive. The organisation trusts her, and expectations are high.
In short, Kajsa’s work focuses on preventing discrimination and promoting inclusion and accessibility at the University of Gävle, benefiting both students and staff. Respect, inclusion, and equality form the basis of a positive work environment. Strong relationships and communication are important here. The lead time from action to impact should be brief.
“The whole academic environment here is generous. Perhaps this is the case because we produce knowledge and want to share it with others or because we are in a place where everyone is here by choice and are genuinely curious.”
Constant change and variety in the role
Kajsa Svaleryd has worked at the University since 2018, drawn in by the scope of the role – the variety in tasks and the constant change. Her work tasks cover administration, investigation, education, and strategic development, working across faculties and administrative divisions and collaborating nationally with other organisations. She also has around 50 colleagues at other institutions.
‘It’s an action-packed job, and what we do is meaningful.’
Working from home is an option, but Kajsa chooses to be on campus every day to handle spontaneous cases and because she enjoys interacting with people in person.
‘I have the advantage of having my own office, which suits me, but I appreciate the flexibility so that I can work from home when needed.’
An organisation of just the right size
The campus buildings contribute to the sense of belonging. She enjoys the historic setting, and the premises are highly functional with a variety of rooms and spaces. She is also finding the organisation’s manageable size advantageous.
“It’s possible to get to know nearly everyone here, and all the managers can fit in a single room, enabling short communication channels and efficient implementation.”
Quick facts:
Campus at Kungsbäck in Gävle is beautifully located near the Gavleån river and Boulognerskogen, just a few minutes from the city centre.
- 19,000 students
- 750 employees
- 122 doctoral candidates
- Around 60 Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes
- Around 330 freestanding courses
Contributing to society
Being in a workplace that contributes to society is something very special, according to Kajsa Svaleryd.
“It’s rewarding to be in a place where 20,000 people, both researchers and students, are here to create the future. The next prime minister might be walking these halls or a future Nobel laureate who started their research here at the University.’
Collaboration and teamwork are actively pursued, Kajsa explains. People’s skills are valued, and if someone needs support or fresh perspectives, colleagues are always there to contribute.
“There is a genuine commitment to creating respectful and inclusive encounters based on the equal value of all individuals. It is an honest and vibrant environment.'"
