Julian Strömqvist named Teacher of the Year
The university's students have named Julian Strömqvist, Lecturer in Industrial Economics, as Teacher of the Year 2024. "I humbly thank you for this and see it as proof that I create value for our students", he says after the award.
Julian has studied at the University of Gävle, been a student ambassador and is now a doctoral student and teaches industrial economics.
- I feel that I am in the right place at the University of Gävle and what I do feels meaningful. What creates my drive and commitment here is that I myself have grown and developed within these premises and that my current colleagues have once been my teachers and they have participated in my journey. It creates a sense of security for me.
Former teachers are now colleagues
Gefle Student Union received over 90 nominations for Teacher of the Year this year. About 25 of them were nominations involving Julian Strömqvist. He feels very humbled by the award.
- I have very knowledgeable colleagues who have contributed a lot to the teacher I am and how I do my work. I have also had very curious students who I have had the privilege of guiding through their education. It is thanks to my colleagues and students that I have been given this opportunity.
A place for growth and laughter
When Julian started teaching, he wanted to reflect the qualities he values in other teachers, while being himself.
- I try to be inviting and accessible to my students. I also try to build a relationship with them and convey that the University is a place for growth, laughter and fruitful discussions. I feel that I have made good contact with my students, which makes my work a privilege, and I want to thank them for that!

"I would like to nominate Julian Strömqvist for Teacher of the Year because he is one of the most committed and inspiring teachers I have had. He has an ability to make teaching both clear and interesting, even when the subject is difficult. He is responsive, sees us as individuals and always goes the extra mile, often more than that, to make us succeed. He explains things in a way that actually sticks, and he genuinely cares. He volunteers his free time to guide, always willing to bounce ideas around and he is a great listener. He deserves to be Teacher of the Year for his commitment."
"Julian is such a teacher who really cares. He is always engaged and takes the time to help, whether it is during the lesson or afterwards. You never feel stupid when you ask something and he encourages you when it feels difficult. He really makes a difference in how you experience the course in terms of difficulty. Even though it's hard, it becomes kind of easy."
"Julian Strömqvist is a teacher who you can really tell cares about his students. He puts in the extra time and energy to make sure that everyone can keep up and get something really good out of the course. You can tell that he does this because he wants to, not because he has to. He is committed, clear and always helpful and that makes a big difference for us students. I honestly think he deserves the Teacher of the Year award more than anyone else."
