Record-breaking Academic Ceremony 2026 – a day to remember
On Friday, April 17, Gävle’s Little Gasometer was filled with a festive atmosphere, anticipation, and academic splendor. This year’s Academic Ceremony was truly extraordinary—an event that broke records on several fronts and showcased the strength and breadth of the University of Gävle.

Never before have so many of the university’s own doctoral candidates received their degrees. A total of 24 new doctoral candidates received their diplomas, along with two honorary doctors. In addition, three professors were installed, one teacher was named Teacher of the Year, and two professors received the Nordea Norrland Foundation’s Scientific Award. The Gefle Student Union also took the opportunity to name Teacher of the Year. In other words, it was a day filled with both pride and celebration.
Anders Kottorp was inaugurated as vice-chancellor
The ceremony began with one of the day’s most symbolic moments: the installation of the University’s new vice-chancellor, Anders Kottorp. The former vice-chancellor, Ylva Fältholm, handed over the elegant vice-chancellor’s chain – designed by Gävle-based glass artist Gunnar Cyrén – thus marking the official handover.
In addition to the vice-chancellor’s chain, Anders Kottorp received the University’s constitutions, which compile the laws and regulations governing its operations. He was also presented with a register of the first students from 1977 – a reminder of the vice-chancellor’s responsibility to safeguard the studies and development of the academic youth.
A ceremony with distinguished guests
The ceremony took place in the Small Gas Bell Hall in front of nearly 300 guests. Among those present were family members and colleagues of the honorees, as well as the county governor, rectors from seven other universities, representatives from municipalities, Region Gävleborg, the business community, and the Church of Sweden. The audience reflected the University’s broad collaboration with the surrounding community.
Premiere of a specially composed fanfare
The music added an extra dimension to the ceremony. The Sandviken Brass Quintet, led by Ulrika Ågren—head of education and a teacher in the Surveying Program—performed, among other pieces, a brand-new composition. The fanfare’s title, “Fanfara rectoris Academiae Gevaliensis,” composed by Fredrik Bobr, was created specifically for the rector’s inauguration and may very well become a recurring feature at future ceremonies.
Inaugural lectures drew a record audience
The week of celebrations kicked off on Wednesday with inaugural lectures at Agnes Kulturhus, in the Krusenstjernasalen. Interest was greater than ever—the hall, which could accommodate 130 people that day, was packed.
The audience was treated to five personal and inspiring lectures that showcased the broad scope of the University’s research.
On Thursday, it was time for the dress rehearsal for doctors, professors, and student marshals.
The rehearsal was led by Master of Ceremonies Jonas Kågström, a researcher and associate professor of business administration, who confidently guided the participants through every part of the ceremony.

A procession in tailcoats and floor-length gowns
When Friday arrived and the ceremony was about to begin, a record-breaking procession marched into the small gasometer. The participants wore formal academic attire – tailcoats for the men and full-length black gowns or equivalent for the women. Medals, chancellors’ chains, doctoral caps, wreaths, and doctoral swords lent the procession a solemn and grand atmosphere.
Dinner and celebrations in the Great Gasometer
After an hour-and-a-half-long ceremony – which was also streamed on the University’s Facebook page – the celebration continued in the Great Gasometer. There, dinner, speeches, and entertainment awaited. The atmosphere was electric as the newly appointed and promoted faculty members could finally relax, accept tributes, and mingle with guests from both the academic community and the surrounding community.
