The university will continue to receive funding for the European University

The EU GREEN university alliance has been awarded 7.2 million euros to continue and develop its collaboration in 2027 and 2028. The University of Gävle is expected to receive approximately 820,000 euros, equivalent to about nine million kronor.

EU GREEN is an alliance of nine European universities that are collaborating on a long-term basis in areas such as education, research, and sustainable development. The goal is to create a more closely interconnected European university where students and staff can study, teach, and conduct research across national borders.

The European Commission has now approved the alliance’s application for funding from the Erasmus+ program. The new funding means that the work can continue for another two years, in 2027 and 2028.

“This announcement is an important confirmation that our joint work with EU GREEN is of high quality. “This is a long-term collaboration, and the financial support is crucial for us to be able to move forward together with our eight European partner universities,” says Anders Kottorp, president of the University of Gävle.

The application received 84 points out of a possible 100. The passing threshold was 80 points. In total, 20 of the 36 European university alliances that applied were awarded funding in this call for proposals.

Creating More Opportunities

EU GREEN works to ensure that this collaboration becomes an integral part of the universities’ regular operations. This involves, among other things, developing joint degree programs and courses, increasing student and staff exchanges, strengthening research collaborations, and involving local communities in efforts toward sustainable development.

For the University of Gävle, the alliance has already led to activities in which students, researchers, and other staff have collaborated with colleagues from across Europe. Among other things, the university has hosted international meetings and educational initiatives focused on sustainable campuses and research.

The new funding will be used to build on the results the alliance has achieved and make more of these opportunities available to students and staff. The EU call for proposals is specifically aimed at enabling existing university alliances to deepen their institutional collaboration and implement their long-term strategies.

EU GREEN is part of the EU initiative European Universities, which aims to foster long-term and strategic collaborations between European higher education institutions. These collaborations are intended to benefit students, staff, and the surrounding community, and to strengthen the quality and international competitiveness of European higher education.

EU GREEN began its current operational period in 2023. The new funding of 7.2 million euros ensures the alliance’s continued work through 2027 and 2028. Gävle University’s preliminary share is approximately 820,000 euros.
