Öberg started his research career 1985 at Kuntokallio Ageing Research Center in Finland. After that he has devoted his whole professional career (first at Uppsala University, later at University of Gävle) to social gerontological research on ageing and later life in projects about life history, body-image, lifestyle, age identity, attitudes, and demography. The last 15 years Öberg’s research (in collaboration with Torbjörn Bildtgård at Stockholm University) has focused on the ageing family and changing family relationships among older people: intergenerational relationships in ageing stepfamilies, new intimate relationships in later life, grey divorce, and ageing without family.
