About the programme

The programme provides you with knowledge in all aspects of geospatial data (geographic information) and modern positioning technologies. You will become a highly sought-after expert capable of leading rapid technological development and driving innovative geospatial data applications forward.

The programme is closely connected to current research and professional practice. Several courses are conducted in collaboration with companies and public agencies through guest lectures, study visits, and project work, giving you practical experience and valuable industry contacts.

A solid foundation is established in mathematics, statistics, and natural sciences. This foundation is gradually expanded with in-depth studies in IT, computer science, AI, GIS, programming and application development, image processing, the application of emerging technologies (big data, sensors, VR, digital twins, etc.), and modern positioning techniques. Specialisation includes, for example, satellite systems, laser scanning, and remote sensing.

Courses within the programme

Unique programme with cutting-edge technology and geodata

The Master of Science in Geospatial and Positioning Engineering is a unique five-year full-time engineering degree. It is possible to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree after three years.

The programme provides you with practical skills and advanced knowledge of geodata and various positioning techniques. You will learn how to determine position in real time and develop everything from simple mobile apps to complex systems for self-driving cars and robots.

Exploring the world from above - creating 3D models and future scenarios with drones and satellite data

You will also fly drones to understand how to use drone imagery, different image processing methods and laser scanning to create and visualize 3D models for urban and community planning, among others. In addition, you will gain insights into how satellite images are used to analyze, for example, landscape changes caused by climate change. The course also includes the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for complex analysis, scenario studies, 3D/4D modelling and visualization.

Opening doors to a diverse career in spatial data and sustainable development

The programme has a cross-sectoral focus that opens opportunities to work in a variety of fields, such as climate change management, sustainable city development, real-time positioning, precision agriculture, and geospatial data services for mobile apps and web-based mapping services.

The programme provides you with the basis for working as both an independent expert in the field of geodata and a strategic leader in both the public and private sectors. In addition, the program provides eligibility for postgraduate studies.

Become attractive on the job market

After graduation, you can work in both the private and public sectors, for example in engineering and consulting companies or government agencies such as Lantmäteriet and Trafikverket, as well as in municipalities. There are also good opportunities for an international career, both as a consultant or by participating in international projects and collaborations.

Global trends such as digitization, data revolution, urbanization and climate adaptation are driving a growing need for experts in geodata and positioning technology. The need for developers and problem solvers in the field is expected to increase, making you attractive on the labor market.

The Programme and the UN Sustainable Development Goals
