Welcome to Lärarlyftet and the Department of English Studies at the University of Gävle!

This course runs throughout the spring term 2026 (weeks 04–23) and is worth 15 credits.

Please read this welcome letter carefully so you’ll be prepared to start!

Course Structure:

You will complete three modules during the course:
• Basic Language Structure – 3.5 credits
• Children’s Literature – 4 credits
• English Didactics – 7.5 credits

Class Schedule:
Classes are held every Monday from 14:00–16:00 via Zoom.
Teaching begins in week 04 and ends in week 23.
Our first meeting will be on Monday, January 19th (week 4).
The Zoom link will be available on Canvas.

You can also find your schedule in the Kronox timetable system no later than four weeks before the course starts. Please be aware that exams may take place on other days and times. All examination dates will be posted on Canvas.

Attendance:
Active participation is required to pass the course. Studying English with us means developing both subject knowledge and your spoken and written language skills. This can only happen when students meet their teachers and participate actively. Many modules include live group work to support the course goal that students should be able to “compare and critically evaluate one’s own and others’ texts and presentations.”

Because of this, attendance is mandatory, with only minor exceptions. To take the exams and pass the course, you must attend all obligatory seminars. Each module includes at least three such seminars.

Course Materials and Workload:
A schedule for each module—including reading instructions—will be posted on Canvas two weeks before the module begins.

As this is a 50% course, plan to spend 10-20 hours per week on your studies. This includes:
• 2 hours of class time on Zoom
• Individual reading
• Preparation
• Writing assignments

Please make sure to order the course literature early.

Special Note: Children’s Literature Module
This module includes many children’s books. It may feel like a lot, but reading a wide selection is important in order to see patterns and make well-grounded pedagogical choices.

We strongly recommend reading as many titles as possible. You may replace a few books with children’s books of your own choice. To keep costs down, feel free to use public libraries or share books with others. Investing in a few titles is also a great way to begin building your own future classroom library.

Please note:
• Lundberg’s De första årens engelska and Sandström’s Kidworthy Works are not children’s books, but they are required reading.
• All books in Basic Language Structure and English Didactics are required.

You will be automatically registered on Canvas when you register for the course. This is our main channel for communication and where you will find material such as the timetable, instructions, assignments, etc. This is also where the different instructors will post general announcements concerning the course and the individual sessions. Therefore, check the course Canvas page regularly.

The syllabus (kursplan) is a legally binding document for teachers and students alike. Students should therefore refrain from requesting instructors to change the course content or shorten the reading list, for example. There is a separate link in the welcome letter to the course plan.

Cheating and plagiarizing are serious academic offences, which result in failing the module in question and being reported to the university’s disciplinary board. You will also be asked to take a knowledge test about cheating on Canvas before you can access any of the course material.
