Host a criminology student for an internship
Offer an internship to a student in the Study Program in Applied Criminology and gain access to up-to-date knowledge, analytical skills, and a curious, driven mindset. Over the course of nine weeks, the student will contribute to your organization while you help shape the criminologists of the future—a win-win situation where theory meets reality and makes a difference.
During their final semester, students in the Study Program in Applied Criminology complete a nine-week internship. For organizations offering internships, this provides an opportunity to receive support in specialized analytical, investigative, or development work—while also contributing to the students’ professional development.
The students have knowledge in areas such as criminal policy, crime prevention, the organization of the judicial system, the role of the law, and issues related to victim support. They have a solid theoretical and methodological foundation and are accustomed to working independently.
For example, they can contribute to:
- planning and conducting investigations
- analysis of crime and safety-related data
- preparing situation assessments and decision-making documents
- monitoring and evaluating measures
- monitoring external developments and compiling research findings
- report writing and presentation of results
Structure and scope of the internship
The internship amounts to approximately 30–35 hours per week over nine weeks, typically weeks 3–11 of the spring semester.
Since the program is offered remotely, both on-site and remote internships are possible. Organizations throughout the country can therefore host students.
The structure and tasks are planned in consultation between the organization, the student, and the University of Gävle.
What is required of you as an internship site?
To host a student, the organization must:
- Offer criminology-relevant work tasks during the internship period
- Appoint a supervisor or contact person
- Submit a brief written evaluation after the internship is completed, which will serve as the basis for grading.
Students are insured through the Kammarkollegiet throughout the entire internship period.
Examples of internship placements
Students have previously completed internships at, for example:
- The Swedish Police Authority
- The Swedish Prison and Probation Service and other law enforcement authorities
- The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention
- Municipal crime prevention and safety promotion initiatives
- Non-profit organizations such as women’s shelters and victim support services
- Banks, security firms, and security departments within large companies
The list above is just a sample of where students have previously completed internships. There are many other organizations that may also be suitable—the most important factor is that relevant work tasks can be offered. The choice of internship placement therefore depends largely on the assignments and development opportunities the organization can offer the student.
