Terms of use for the library’s e-resources

Here you can find information about the terms of use of the library’s electronic resources, including journals, e-books and databases.

The terms of use for e-resources vary depending on whether the material is included in the library’s subscriptions or is openly available (open access) under specific licences.

Materials included in the library's subscriptions

Material included in the library’s subscriptions may be used by students and staff at the University of Gävle, as well as by visitors to the library. The terms of use are governed by the library’s agreements with individual providers and may therefore vary between different e-resources. Information about the terms that apply to a specific e-resource can be found on the provider’s platform.

The following generally applies:

You may

• Save, copy and print individual articles, chapters or short sections for personal use for educational or research purposes.
• As a teacher, compile extracts from e-books and articles in printed or digital course compendiums for teaching at the University of Gävle. You may also upload course compendiums to the University’s learning platform, Canvas.
• As a researcher, share individual articles, chapters or short sections for scholarly purposes with colleagues at other organisations that are not covered by the agreement (known as scholarly sharing).
  

You may not

• Download, copy or print large quantities of material, such as an entire issue of a journal or an entire book, unless this is expressly permitted by the provider.
• Use software or automated methods to systematically download, copy or collect material from e-resources.
• Use the material for commercial purposes.
• Distribute copyrighted material, for example by forwarding it, making it available online, or uploading it to external AI services where the content may be stored or used for further processing.

Material that is openly available

Openly available material may be used by anyone in accordance with the licence or terms of use applied to the material by the copyright holder.

Creative Commons (CC) licences are commonly used. The most permissive Creative Commons licence is CC BY, which allows you to adapt and distribute the material as long as you give appropriate credit to the original creators. However, there are also more restrictive licences that, for example, limit the use of material for commercial purposes.

If no licence or terms of use are provided, this does not automatically mean that the material may be used freely. The material is normally protected by copyright, and you should contact the copyright holder if you are unsure whether your intended use is permitted.
