BioUNIVERSITY – Explore biodiversity in your local area

BioUNIVERSITY is an initiative in which students, researchers, and the general public work together to explore and document biodiversity in their local environment. By sharing simple observations, you can help expand our knowledge of plants and animals—while also supporting research and sustainable development.

What is BioUNIVERSITY?

BioUNIVERSITY is a citizen science project in which students, researchers, and the general public work together to document biodiversity in their local environment. By recording plants and animals, you contribute to expanding our knowledge, while the data is used in research, education, and efforts to create a more sustainable environment.

The project aims to foster both knowledge and engagement:

  • Increase understanding of biodiversity
  • Spark interest in nature and the environment
  • Foster collaboration between universities and the community
  • Help preserve local ecosystems

Small observations can, when combined, provide a broader picture.

Who can participate?

Anyone who’s curious about nature is welcome to join; you don’t need any prior knowledge, just an interest in nature.

Where and when?

You can make observations in various types of green spaces, such as on campus, in parks, or in other natural settings. No matter where you are, you can contribute valuable knowledge about the biodiversity in your local area.

You can participate year-round, but spring, summer, and early fall are particularly good times to do so.

How does it work?

It’s easy to get started:

1. Download the iNaturalist app
2. Take a photo of a plant, insect, or animal
3. Upload your observation
4. Get help with identification
5. Contribute to shared knowledge

iNaturalist is a global platform where both technology and people work together to help identify species and ensure data quality.

Quality and Results

To ensure that the observations are useful, the project follows a multi-step process: Observations are reviewed by other users, experts help with species identification, and participants receive guidance on how to document their findings effectively. This ensures that the collected data is both reliable and useful for research.

Through the project, we can:

  • Gain a better understanding of biodiversity
  • Create a foundation for sustainable development
  • Develop and improve our green spaces
  • Strengthen the connection between research, education, and society
