About the researcher
Desirée Ödén a postdoctoral researcher in business administration, especially organization, leadership and control. She is part of the research group Sustainable Organization and Management and her postdoc project focusses on the green industrial transformation, how it affects both organizations and society, and how the conditions for work and workers are constituted. The studies are conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University of Gävle and Mid Sweden University and analyze large industrial establishments in northern Sweden, with examples from Skellefteå, Ånge and Timrå.
Ödén earned her doctoral degree in management accounting at Stockholm University in 2024, with a doctoral dissertation titled ”Time to Work – Responsibilization in the Swedish Welfare State”. The dissertation is a qualitative study of the establishment of refugees on the Swedish labour market after the so-called refugee crisis in 2015/2016. The results from interviews and observations from the Establishment Programme at Swedish Public Employment Service are analyzed as a performance management system emphasizing and problematizing the relation between the individual and the state. The analysis is made through the theoretical lens of contemporary Critical Theory and the classical Marxist concepts alienation and reification. The dissertation was nominated for the Wallanderstipendiet in 2024.

Ödén supervise bachelor theses in several business administration sub disciplines; organization and leadership, management accounting and financial accounting.

Other
Except for scientific research, Ödén is a co-author of Västerbotten County’s report on how the Swedish Government handled the situation for people from countries outside of EU who had come to Sweden to work for battery manufacturer Northvolt, after its bankruptcy in 2025 (forthcoming). Before joining the University of Gävle, she worked as a business development manager with responsibility for the area of strategic workforce planning and talent attraction at Skellefteå Municipality. She has also worked as a management consultant with PwC and EY.
