Welfare Technology in Action
People with intellectual disabilities should have ample opportunities to lead active and healthy lives. In the ongoing research project “Welfare Technology in Action,” researchers are investigating how digital tools can be used to boost motivation for physical activity and support healthy lifestyle habits. On this page, you can follow the project and learn about its findings.
People with intellectual disabilities are often less physically active than the general population, which can affect their health, well-being, and quality of life. At the same time, digital assistive devices and assistive technology are developing rapidly and offer new opportunities to support healthy lifestyles. This project investigates how digital tools can be used to increase motivation for physical activity and create better conditions for an active life for people with intellectual disabilities.
Purpose
The purpose of the project is to systematically compile and analyze research on how digital tools affect motivation and physical activity among people with intellectual disabilities. The project will identify which digital solutions are most effective and highlight the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing assistive technology in social services and support programs.
Methodology
The project will be conducted as a systematic literature review in accordance with the methodology of the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Social Services (SBU). Scientific studies from several international databases will be reviewed and analyzed to identify the effects of digital tools such as apps, activity trackers, game-based training, and other technological solutions aimed at promoting physical activity.
The quality and reliability of the studies will be systematically assessed to ensure that the results are based on the best available scientific evidence.
Expected Results
The project is expected to contribute to a better understanding of how digital tools can be used to enhance motivation and physical activity among people with intellectual disabilities. The results will support decision-makers, social services, health and care providers, and family members in selecting evidence-based digital solutions.
In the long term, the project can contribute to greater independence, better health, and an improved quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities, as well as to the development of more inclusive and sustainable welfare services.
