Cheating and Disciplinary Matters

You are not allowed to mislead during an exam or during assessment of some other type of study performance. In short, you are not allowed to cheat. All forms of cheating are absolutely prohibited and will invariably lead to disciplinary measures.

What is considered as cheating?

  • Using prohibited aids such as notes during an exam. Neither are mobile phones or other types of electronic equipment allowed.
  • Using someone else’s ideas or work without stating your source. Reusing your own text, that has previously been used in another context, without proper citation is also considered plagiarism. This is called self-plagiarism.
  • Unauthorised cooperation between students in connection with essay writing or take-home exams.
  • Helping someone else can also be considered cheating. You must not allow someone else to copy your responses from a take-home exam or to copy your writing in an essay.

Students who use AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in a deceptive manner (i.e. creating the impression that the text was produced by the student) may be subjected to disciplinary action.

Reported to the Student Disciplinary Board

The one who suspects that you have cheated can report it to the Vice-Chancellor, who either takes a decision in the matter directly, or hands it over to the Disciplinary Board. In this Board, the Vice-Chancellor sits together with student and teacher representatives and a judge, a legally qualified representative.

The consequences may be that they dismiss the matter, issue a warning or decide that you should be suspended from your studies for a certain period of time. The decision made by a disciplinary board to suspend or warn you can be appealed to an administrative court. If the disciplinary board decides to dismiss the case, this decision cannot be appealed.

Disciplinary Matters

Regulations regarding disciplinary matters can be found in chapter 10 in the Higher Education Ordinance. According to 1 §, disciplinary measures may be taken against students who:

  • use unauthorised aids or other methods to attempt to mislead during examinations or other forms of study performance assessment.
  • disrupt or obstruct teaching, examinations, or other activities within the framework of courses and study programmes at the University.
  • disrupt activities in the University library of or in another separate establishments at the University.
  • subject another student or member of the staff at the University to harassment or sexual harassment of the kind described in Chapter 1, 4 § of the Discrimination Act (2008:567).
  • Disciplinary measures may not be taken more than two years after the offence was committed.
