Barriers and Opportunities for People with Intellectual Disabilities to Be Physically Active in Their Daily Lives
People with intellectual disabilities should have ample opportunities to be physically active in their daily lives. This research project examines the barriers and opportunities that influence physical activity, health, and participation in a Swedish and Nordic context. On this page, you can follow the project and access the results of our work.
People with intellectual disabilities are generally less physically active than the rest of the population, which can affect both their health and quality of life. At the same time, there is limited knowledge about which factors facilitate or hinder physical activity in daily life. The project aims to increase knowledge about these barriers and opportunities in order to create better conditions for an active and healthy life.
Purpose
The purpose of the project is to identify the barriers and opportunities that influence physical activity among people with intellectual disabilities in a Swedish and Nordic context. The findings will contribute to the development of interventions, working methods, and forms of collaboration that can promote physical activity and health.
Methodology
The project is based on interviews with people with intellectual disabilities and stakeholders who work closely with this target group, such as municipalities, regional authorities, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations. The work is supplemented by a literature review and an analysis of previous projects and initiatives in Sweden and the Nordic countries.
Results to Date
During the project’s first year, six focus group interviews were conducted with representatives from municipalities, the region, community organizations, educational institutions, and civil society. In addition, 15 people with intellectual disabilities were interviewed.
Preliminary results show that support from dedicated leaders, adapted activities, social connection, and access to assistive devices can facilitate physical activity. At the same time, barriers such as lack of accessibility, transportation difficulties, financial constraints, and the need for support in planning and carrying out activities have been identified. The results will be further analyzed as the project continues.
