The ultimate goal of your training is to obtain a degree. Below is a summary of what needs to be planned and prepared.

On this page you will find a summary of what needs to be planned and prepared in order to apply for the defense of your thesis, the printing of the thesis and then how the defense takes place. It also provides information on how to apply for your degree and participate in the degree ceremony.

To be able to apply for a licentiate seminar or thesis defense, you normally need to have completed all courses in accordance with your general study plan.

Before the examination, there are a number of steps that you and your principal supervisor need to plan.

The university's specific regulations regarding the public defense can be found in the university's regulations about doctoral thesis and grading system pdf, 214.7 kB.. The same rules also apply to the licentiate seminar. When planning, you must ensure that these rules are followed.

Prior to the examinations, the licentiate seminar and the public defense, a plagiarism check must be done on the thesis work. The principal supervisor is responsible for ensuring that a plagiarism check is made.

Licentiate seminar:
The doctoral student submits the material to be submitted, the thesis and unpublished parts of the thesis, to gup@hig.se no later than 10 weeks before the licentiate seminar.

Dissertation:
The doctoral student submits the thesis and unpublished parts of the thesis to gup@hig.se at least 10 weeks before the date of the defense.

When a proposal for the date of the licentiate seminar or public defence has been made and there is contact with the opponent, examiner/grading committee and chair and they have accepted the assignment, a notification of implementation needs to be made to the academic committee.

It is your director of studies who formally submits the notification to the academic board that will decide on the implementation.

Communication about upcoming licentiate seminars and doctoral theses is normally handled by the academy concerned.

Communication about research results in the form of completed sub-work, such as published articles, may be communicated internally and externally by the University. Normally, published sub-works are captured via searches in Diva, which is done by AKE.

You can also inform AKE of interesting ongoing work. The choice of means of communication and what is communicated is decided by AKE.

At the University, the thesis must be written in a special template and follow the University's graphic profile. It is recommended that you write the thesis directly in the template.

Printing of the thesis
Printing of the thesis is done in collaboration with Thesis Production at Uppsala University Library.

At least three weeks before the licentiate seminar or the public defence of the thesis, the thesis must be made public. This is done by publishing the thesis in DiVA.

At the University, the doctoral thesis can also be made public through a ceremonial nailing. The nailing takes place in the library and is voluntary.

At the public licentiate seminar, the doctoral student (respondent) defends his/her thesis. The seminar is also attended by the principal supervisor, supervisors, examiner and interested members of the public have the opportunity to ask questions. The seminar is chaired by a specially appointed chairperson.

At the public defense, the doctoral student (respondent) defends his/her thesis. The chairman, the opponent, the members of the examining committee and interested members of the public are also present at the public defense.

The main purposes of the public defense are

  • to give the public an insight into the way in which the doctoral candidate has contributed to the development of knowledge
  • to prepare a scientifically first-class examination of the thesis
  • to give the doctoral candidate the opportunity to demonstrate his/her ability to discuss research both popularly and at a high scientific level.

University of Gävle's regulation about doctoral thesis and grading system pdf, 214.7 kB. regulates that the external examiner and/or members of the grading committee may participate digitally at a distance, if there are special reasons for this. The same rules also apply to the licentiate seminar.

When the licentiate seminar or thesis defense has been completed with a passing grade, the grade report registered in Ladok and all your courses, in accordance with your general study plan, have been completed with a passing grade, you can apply for a degree.

The most solemn act at the University is the doctoral ceremony, when doctoral students who have completed their doctoral degree are awarded doctorates. We also confer honorary doctorates for meritorious work in their field. The person to be promoted enters the parade, is greeted by the promoter and receives the laurel wreath or doctoral hat and the diploma.
