The academic approach includes showing that you know the research that has been done in the field of knowledge. In scientific texts, you as a writer often refer to or quote from the scientific work of others. If you do not use referencing techniques and citations when you write about something you have read or heard in a correct way, you have not followed the rules of academic writing and may be accused of plagiarism.
