BIP - Epidemiology Applications for Health and Sustainability
This Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) will introduce learners to epidemiology in the context of public and occupational health and will focus on the use of epidemiology techniques for advancing sustainability in health management.
The Epidemiology Applications for Health and Sustainability BIP includes on-line lectures led by experts paired with interactive workshops and group projects for practical skill development.
We welcome students from all backgrounds for whom epidemiological consideration of health is relevant.

The course will include the following topics:
Topic 1: Introduction to Epidemiology for Health and Sustainability Research
Topic 2: Health Surveillance Systems and Applications
Topic 3: Systematized Reviews from Protocol Registration to Assessment of Quality and Risk of Bias
Topic 4: An introduction to using R for basic Epidemiology Applications
Topic 5: Current themes in Epidemiological Research and Sustainability

Campus University of Gävle
After completing the course, learners should be able to:
- describe the health of a population by person, time and place.
- interpret basic statistical methods within epidemiological papers.
- design, register and perform a systematic review.
- formulate appropriate research questions and assess evidence for developing recommendations for practice.
- assess and appraise the effectiveness of public and/or occupational health interventions or services.
Practical Information
Applicants can be: Master students, Doctoral students, Assistant researchers, lecturers, young researchers in any field of study.
Tuition fee: free of charge for students registrerad in EU GREEN University or University in other EES country.
Dates: The on-line sessions will be held each Thursday between May 7th and June 18th, 2026. The in-person study week will occur August 17th – 21th, 2026 at The University of Gävle (Sweden).
Study period and scope:
- VIRTUAL attendance: Each Thursday between May 7th and June 18th, 2026
- IN-PRESENCE attendance in Gävle, Sweden /University of Gävle, 100 %: August 17th – 21th
Language of instruction: English. All submitted work and presentations must be done in English. Applicants must have a minimum B1 level in English
ECTS for participation in the programme: 6 ECTS credits

Financial support
An Erasmus+ Short Mobility Grant may be available for students travelling to Gävle to participate in the BIP. Contact the Erasmus+ Mobility Officer at your home university to determine whether funding is available.
Selected students from the University of Gävle will not be eligible for financial support as they will not be travelling to participate in this BIP but are welcome to apply to join the BIP.
